* ON Contemporaries & Dottie Lasky in the New Yorker
Posted on February 12th, 2010 by robert. Filed under Books.
The 2nd issue of ON Contemporary Practice is out. Devoted to “the responsibility of making the work of peers legible to each other, and to revealing the place of contemporary poetries within larger historical continuums and trends,” ON is without a doubt the coolest poetics/critical magazine going, & one wonderfully shot-thru with a refreshing ethos of friendship & “desiring-criticism” rather than academe. (Above I’ve quoted & slightly modified an old blog post written by co-editor Thom Donovan about something else, but whose phrasing, I think, clearly captures the spirit of the journal.) Critical texts in no. 2 by Rosa Alcalá, Stan Apps, Cara Benson, David Brazil, Laynie Browne, CAConrad, Corina Copp, Michael Cross, meeee, Thom Donovan, Patrick James Dunagen, Joel Felix, Robert Kocik, Chris Martin, CJ Martin, Laura Moriarty, Rich Owens, Evelyn Reilly, Michelle Taransky, Dan Thomas-Glass, Robin Tremblay-McGaw, Brian Whitener, & Tyrone Williams
on
Mónica de la Torre, Stephanie Young, Susanna Gardner, Brandon Brown, Lee Ann Brown, Brenda Iijima, poet’s theater, Judith Goldman & Jennifer Scappetonne, Dorothea Lasky, Bhanu Kapil, Edmund Berrigan & Jeff Karl Butler & John Coletti, William Fuller, Stacy Szymaszek, John Coletti, Rob Halpern, conceptualisms, flarf & conceptual writing &c., Rosmarie Waldrop, Stacy Szymaszek, Jasper Bernes & Bay Area Publishing, Jocelyn Saidenberg, Dolores Dorantes, & Erica Hunt.
ON has a handsome new website here. The issue is available through SPD here.
The editors write, “ON is a poetics journal committed to contemporary practices in the arts. ON does not publish book reviews, individual poems, chapbooks, performances, etc. ON is facilitated, not edited.”
I am so happy that ON created an occasion for me to write about one of my favorite living poets, Dorothea Lasky. I wrote on Dorothea this summer while living at altitude in the wet desert of northern Nevada, under a Cancer moon.
Here is a small illustration as a preview of the essay:
Also, Dorothea has a poem in the current issue of the New Yorker. She is the best.
