Frankenstein vs. the World

Eric Baus has written a thoughtful review of CAConrad & Thom Donovan’s Arthur Echo over at Jacket2, linking to a recording of a February performance of the book at Zebulon Cafe in Brooklyn. Baus also  cannily nods to Kevin Killian’s heartstopping poem about Russell, “Is It All Over My Face?,” and links these two works — obliquely — by noticing the way that Russell’s music both exemplifies and spurs multiple voicings.

Pilgrimage to Buffalo this April Fool’s Day to celebrate the amazing life & work of the one and only Bernadette Mayer. Modes of Love and Reason: A Bernadette Mayer Symposium will feature critical talks by scholars Stephen Cope (Bard College), Lee Ann Brown (St. John’s University), Caitlin Newcomer (Florida State University), Deborah Poe (Pace University), Sam Truitt (Station Hill Press), and Joey Yearous-Algozin (SUNY-Buffalo); a roundtable of contemporary poets CAConrad, Dorothea Lasky, and Brenda Coultas discussing their own elective affinities with Mayer; and a keynote address by art critic Liz Kotz (Words to Be Looked At). Bernadette Mayer herself will take the stage at 8 p.m. for a reading.

My long-planned Scary Topiary Press has finally arrived with its first chapbook, the wondrous Arthur Echo by CAConrad & Thom Donovan! A (Soma)tic collaboration, Arthur Echo documents a Winter 2009 day Conrad and Donovan spent listening to cellist Arthur Russell’s World of Echo on a twelve-hour loop in a five-story Philadelphia house. There is still raspberry-colored fabric paint on my left elbow from silk-screening the covers all last week, & the book’s back cover features the beautiful portrait of Arthur Russell by artist Sunnylee Mowery shown above (the raspberry paint is darker in person).
